Ahother Reminiscence -- This One From Our Former Baker And Friend Jennifer
TRIBUTE
Herman Goodden's memories of the Auberge
I worked as a baker at the Auberge du Petit Prince when Herman Goodden was the dish washer.
Indeed there are two images that always come to mind when remembering working there: Herman reading cross-legged on the counter, and Ginette, with a cigarette stub, most of it ash, stuck in the corner of her mouth while stirring the stock pot. Somehow, the ash never fell into the soup.
As Herman mentions, the best part of work was after the paying customers left and the friends descended. Although I graduated from Western, I think the greatest part of my education was late at night around Robin and Ginette's table with artists, art collectors, musicians, and writers.
Subsequently I have worked at the Cookbook Store in Toronto where the passion for food and wine instilled in all their workers by Ginette Bisaillon and Robin Askew have stood me in very fine stead.
